UWA 04.29.05 Show Review |
|
UWA 04.29.05 - The New Era
The whole premise of this show is crowning a new
UWA Heavyweight Champion and to announce that
the former Heavyweight championship is now the
Undisputed Championship. There was quite the
debate on what to name the new championship belt
as nobody could really agree on anything, but in
the end the generic name won out. Maybe next
time. The original plans called for a six man
tournament including Gage, Slavins, Calypso,
Prototype, Outlaw, and Steiner, with the finals
being a triple threat match for the title with
Steiner going over the Undisputed champion
Calypso. Outlaw no-showed, however, and the
tournament was changed quite a bit. Instead of
Calypso Vs Outlaw, Calypso got a bye, and the
finals were Steiner Vs Calypso with Calypso
causing a double-DQ in the Gage/Slavins match.
Perhaps it was for the better because the actual
main event is probably better than what the
triple threat would turn out to be. Anyways...on
with the show.
Mike Moros is out in the ring as the show starts
and announces the card and mispronounces
Slavins' name. Calypso Vs Outlaw is announced
which brings out Calypso who "couldn't help but
notice" that Outlaw couldn't show because of an
injury caused by him. He demands a bye and the
GM grants him one and places Calypso in the
finals. Both men shake hands then Calypso takes
the Heavyweight belt and poses with both the
Heavyweight and Undisputed belts and we cut to
commercial break.
Bob Slavins and Trace are your announcers as
Horatio couldn't make it.
Round 1 Match: Steiner Vs Prototype
The commentary puts Prototype over big time.
Steiner and Prototype fight for control earlier
on and Steiner tosses PT into the wall and hits
a DDT. Steiner knees Prototype and then hits a
stalling suplex which causes PT to salute to
Hitler. PT makes a comeback with punches but
gets caught in the GaleSlam which gets the three
count at
0:42.
Trace says the UWA lost $2,000 on Prototype's
appearance. DUD. Squash city, a first for the
UWA.
Round 1 and Best of Five Series Match Two:
Gage Vs Scott Slavins
Right now Gage leads the series 1-0. Both men
stare each other down then grapple, Slavins
tosses Gage down, gets kicked off, ducks a
clothesline, misses a dropkick, then gets
slapped in the head. Gage charges and runs into
a dropkick followed by repeated slaps to the
head and a standing facewash followed by a
senton splash onto Gage. Slavins applies an
armbar followed by knees to the stomach. Double
knees to Gage followed by two shoulder tackles.
Slavins works on the arm some more and then the
springboard kick to the back of the head which
gets two. Slavins works o nthe mid-section with
repeated knees and then hits two punches to the
stomach and then hits the Dudley Bog which gets
two. Gage fights up and hits a backdrop followed
by a brainbuster followed by a snapmare flip
over. Gage locks in the headscissors takeover,
Slavins fights out, then gets hit with a
powerbomb which only gets Gage a two. Gage
bodyslams Slavins then hits a shooting star
press in which he lands on Slavins face. Trace's
phone rings and Bobby is all on his own on
commentary to which he "Uhhhhhhh" a lot
inbetween calling the superkick and three
friends which get a two. Slavins pushes the ref
down and hits a snapmare/dropkick combo then
hits a springboard dropkick to the back of the
head. Slavins asks the ref if he's ready to
count to three and Slavins sets up the gore.
Gage makes it to his feet, Slavins goes for the
RKO instead of the gore, then gets tossed off
and then earns some knees to the midsection.
Gage hits a dropkick and Trace announces he'll
be getting money Friday. Both men get up until
Slavins applies a headlock takedown but Gage
rolls out of it and gets kicked in the back for
his trouble. Slavins sets up the chair and hits
a swanton over the chair on Gage. Slavins spends
a couple seconds setting up the chair as Gage
keeps moving but Slavins finally places it where
he wants it and dropkicks Gage in the back of
the head which only gets two. Slavins sets up
for the gore once again and he hits it and
Gage's shoe flies off, literally. Slavins goes
for a pin but Calypso comes out of nowhere and
nails Slavins with the chair then tosses the ref
down. Gage gets tossed into the ropes and nailed
with a chairshot as well. Calypso stomps down on
both men and hits two F5s, one for each, then
poses. The match is a double DQ at
8:32.
** The match wasn't all that good, just a spotfest,
although they didn't have much time to tell a
story so I can't fault them, although their last
match was around the same time and was a little
better (got ***).
We come back from commercial break with Moros
saying Slavins and Gage are out of commission
thanks to Calypso's attack and the main event is
now Steiner Vs Calypso.
Round 2 Match: Steiner Vs Calypso (For the
UWA Heavyweight Championship)
Calypso takes time to poses with both belts for
good measure prematch. Mike Moros is YOUR
special ref. Both men circle each other,
grapple, Calypso gets locked in a headlock,
fights out and puts in the STO. Steiner fights
out with elbows and there's double shoulder
tackles everywhere until Calypso goes down.
Steiner ducks a clothesline but gets hit with a
spinebuster for two. Calypso hits repeated kicks
to the back, misses his dropkick, ducks a
clothesline, then gets a clothesline of his own.
Trace's grandma comes in and gives him $30. Both
men grapple again and Calypso puts in the front
frace lock and takes Steiner to the ground.
Calypso goes for the stiff kicks again and hits
the dropkick this time for two. Calypso hits a
suplex followed by some stiff punches, misses a
kick but manages to hit another suplex on
Steiner. Steiner kicks out at two so Calypso
hits three front flips followed by an elbow drop
from Steiner's back but once again gets a two
count. Calypso tosses Steiner into the ropes but
gets DDT'd for his effort as Bobby announces he
went to Outlaw's School of Wrestling where he
learned a DDT, dropkick, and how to have a five
star match. Both men work their way back up to
their feet and exchange punches. Steiner wins
the fight and hits another DDT for two. Steiner
hits a suplex which made Calypso turn a little
in mid-air followed by stiff kicks. Steiner hits
a big boot for two. Steiner locks in the
Steinerlock as we cut to commercial break. We
come back with Calypso tossing Steiner into the
ropes and hits a ribbreaker which got a great
reaction but only a two. Calypso gets tossed
into the ropes though and nailed with a
spinebuster. Calypso fights out of the Galeslam
and hits a reverse breakdown. Calypso hits it
again but couldn't get the full cover and only
earns a two. Calypso goes for the F5 but Steiner
fights out and hits a DDT followed by the
GALESLAM~ which gets the three count at
9:28.
*** Not a technical classic but an entertaining
brawl and a good match for Steiner's first true
singles match. Calypso did his part and carried
Steiner to his best match to date. Of course, as
we all know, Steiner never really fulfilled his
potential. Not yet anyways.
Very short show from the UWA with three matches
and the total show being only 22:46 and I can't
help but feel the matches needed more time to
tell a story and get the match over. The
tournament itself was oddly planned and was
almost pointless as the two finalist didn't even
work a full match (Steiner with a 40 second
squash and Calypso with a bye) but the main
event itself was entertaining enough and
Gage/Slavins was watchable and with a little
more time could have been a lot better. Unless
you're curious about the start of the
Heavyweight title, there's no real reason to
watch this show. Thumbs down.
