UWA 05.20.05 Show Review |

UWA 05.20.05 - The Tradition Begins
So, this is the UWA's version of a Pay-Per-View.
Most shows last around 30 minutes at most, but
this show clocks in at 58 minutes and 26
seconds, and features two big title matches
along with the 2nd in the Best of 5 Series with
Gage and Slavins. They added some little new
things like having their music played during the
recording, which can be both good and bad, as
sometimes you can't hear it and other times it
can drown out the commentators. The commentary
is getting a little better in terms of having
focus, but stills needs some work. The entrance
is back up as well and is wider than the last
time it was use. They also have an entrance
ramp, which is esstionally carpet padding, but
it works. Let's get on with the show.
Opening Segement
GM Mike Moros comes out to the ring and in it is
a table with a box on it. Moros says in the box
is a special surprise for Calypso, since he's
been such a dominant champion. We also get
things cleared about Calypos's title - it's now
the Undisputed title. Calypso comes out, dressed
in a suit - haven't seen that since what,
Septemeber? Calypso seems weary of what's in the
box, and tells Moros he better not screw this
up. He opens the box to reveal the NEW
Undisputed championship belt, which is really
snazzy. Calypso says after being in the UWA for
a month, Moros finally did something right. He
asks Moros to raise his hand with the new belt,
and he does. Moros walks away and Calypso
attacks him from behind, just to be a jerk. He
stomps on the GM, who's out cold, as we fade
away.
2nd Match in a Best of 5
Scott Slavins Vs Gage (Gage leads 1-0)
This is actually the third match in the series,
but due to Calypso breaking up the match at the
last show, nobody scored a victory. Both men
have an intense staredown, then break it up.
Both men circle the ring as the bell sounds,
then lock up. Slavins gets taken down, Gage
misses a moonsault, Slavins misses a wizard,
Gage goes over, tosses Slavins over his head,
and hits a clothesline, followed by a bodyslam.
Nice opening sequence. Slavins takes a delay
suplex, which looked like it had some nice
impact on it. Gage works on the ribs with some
brutal knees to Slavins, then hits a
backbreaker, followed by a spinning backbreaker.
Some actual psychology in this series - yes!
Gage continues with more knees to Slavins' ribs,
then he argues with the ref. Slavins takes
advantage with a brutal dropkick to the fact,
followed by the snapmare/dropkick combo. Roll up
gets a two. Slavins drops some knees to the
midsection of Gage, working with the same plan
as Gage. Slavins goes for a modified Octopus
Stretch and then turns it in a reverse DDT for
two. Slavins stomps the midsection followed by a
dropping headbutt. Slavins climbs the ladder and
hits a painful-looking senton splash. Slavins
hits a flipping legdrop and gets a two count.
Slavins hits a running knee, and he has
officially taken control of this match. He looks
in the Camel Clutch followed by the Border City
Stretch. Slavins works on the arm for the time
being, Gage flips out of it, Slavins does the
same, reapplies the lock, and then tosses Gage
into the ladder, nearly breaking it. We take a
break and come back with a Sliced Bread #2 from
Slavins, but only gets a two. Slavins grabs a
chair, and then nails Gage with it, nearly
knocking him out. He followed with the flip over
the chair, followed by the snapmare and a
dropkick to the midsection, followed by more
work on the midsection. Gage fights out and hits
an arm drag, followed by a stiff kick to the
back for good measure. Slavins rolls up into the
Rube Goldberg Bulldog, only getting a two count.
Slavins pounds the knee even more into the
stomach, followed by a double stomp to the ribs.
Slavins goes for the spear, hits the house, and
then does a cool flip thing with Slavins on his
shoulders. Gage locks in the Masterlock, but
Slavins rolls out only to get picked up and
dropped on his head, then his face. Gage goes
for the stretch muffler, but Slavins rolls out
of it for two. Slavins gets tossed and jumps
over a chair, only for Gage to flip over the
chair and onto Slavins, followed by a standing
Shooting Star Press which gets a two. Gage
argues with the ref again, and Slavins rolls him
up, and Gage fights out of it with another roll
up, and they continue to do this about twenty
times. Slavins manages to end the roll up fest,
and then hits a kick to the back of the head off
the chair. Slavins hits a springboard RKO off
the chair, but that only gets a two. Gage gets
up first and hits a dropkick, but gets caught in
the ankle lock, and Slavins rolls up into a
headlock. Gage works his way up, tosses Slavins
into the ropes, and gets nailed with a dropkick
for his troubles. Slavins runs around Gage to
confuse him, then hits another RKO, but once
again he only gets a two. Slavins goes for an
armbar, but Gage turns it into the TKO, and he
climbs the ladder! He hits the moonsault, but
can't cover due to his ribs hurting him too bad!
PSYCHOLOGY PAYS OFF! Slavins and Gage both work
their way up, but Slavins hits a BRUTAL spear
and gets the wins.
(14:45)
***1/2 Great opener and they actually used
psychology in the match, and it paid off.
Probably the best these two have had. After the
match, Gage gets nailed with another brutal
chair shot by Slavins.
UWA Heavyweight Title (Hardcore Rules)
Outlaw Vs Steiner
The ref is some Asian guy who dances to the
music of both men. Outlaw is a gangsta' now,
coming with bling and a gun, and a pre-match
rap. Steiner doesn't like the rap and attacks to
start things off. Steiner grapples and gets a
knee and a bulldog. Outlaw hits a huge
clothesline that turns Steiner inside out.
Outlaw hits a nice high dropkick and both men
grapple, but Steiner just destroys Outlaw with
stiff punches and then hits a DDT. Steiner hits
a suplex then tosses Outlaw into the ropes and
clotheslines him. Steiner hits a suplex and some
new guy comes in and nails Steiner with a pan!
Outlaw gets up and gets hit by the new guy, and
it's a DOUBLE DQ.
(1:31)
So, we get a triple threat.
UWA Heavyweight Title (Hardcore
Elimination Rules)
Outlaw Vs Steiner Vs The Sarge
We're joined in progress with Steiner suplexing
Sarge. Outlaw and Steiner give Sarge a
conchairto with pans then attack the downed
Sarge. Steiner nails Outlaw with a pan, followed
by the Gale Slam early in the match, then works
on Sarge. Sarge gets tossed and nailed with a
big boot. Outlaw gets a big boot from Steiner as
well. Sarge attacks Steiner and works on the
arm. Outlaw hits Sarge with another pan, then
nails him with a leather belt. Steiner sends
Outlaw down and nails both men with the leather
belt, and then hits yet another big boot on
Sarge. We're getting a little redundant. Steiner
hits Outlaw with a chair, but Sarge blocks it,
only to get hit in the knee with the chair.
Steiner attempts to Pillminize Sarge's ankle,
but he doesn't sell it too well as he he gets up
and nails Outlaw once again. Steiner then hits
Outlaw with a chair, and Sarge jumps in with a
pan, and then hits people with wood. It's hard
to describe this match. Sarge hits a suplex to
Steiner, and the Asian ref nails Sarge with the
belt. Outlaw hits Sarge in the nuts with the
belt, then does it to the knee. Sarge gets up
and hits a backbody drop on Outlaw. More pan
shots. Sarge chokes Outlaw out with the chain
while the ref ties him up for some reaosn. Sarge
and Steiner wrap Outlaw in a chain, then Steiner
hits a vicious DDT. Sarge does a bad clothesline
to Steiner, then, guess what, a suplex to
Outlaw. Sarge gets choked with the chain, then
Outlaw punches the Heavyweight champion out,
then gets knocked out with a chain shot to the
head. Sarge and Steiner duel with pans, and then
no sell it and give a Double Gale Slam to
Outlaw, which eliminates him.
(7:37)
Steiner attacks Sarge as the ref helps Outlaw
out. Steiner hits Sarge with the belt, but Sarge
fights out of the Gale Slam and hits Steiner
with the MORTOR! He stomps on the champion, then
punches him, followed by a chest bump of doom.
He gets Outlaw's gun, then some random guy
without a shirt runs in and knocks Sarge out
with the chair. Steiner continues to hit him
with the chair, and then they exchange chair
shots...and basically no sell everything. The
shirtless guys comes back in and botches a SSP
horribly, and the Asian ref kicks him out,
whoever it is. We never see his face clearly.
Sarge gets picked up for the Gale Slam, but
Sarge reverses it into a rollup! It's a double
three count, and there's huge "FIVE MORE
MINUTES" chants, so the match continues. It
continues as Steiner takes advantage and hits
the Gale Slam and gets the pin!
(10:53)
Wrestling wise, this was a DUD. But, as far as a
comedy match, this was the best UWA has done
(actually, the only) and thus gets **** on that
scale. Huge "THANK YOU" chants. After the match,
the Asian ref kicks Sarge and runs away.
Main Event - UWA Undisputed Championship
Scott Slavins Vs Calypso
Slavins comes out dressed as a wigger. This is
due to Calypso costing Slavins a shot at the
Heavyweight title and the match at the last
show, and since they're best buds Calypso gives
him a title shot. This is Calypso's 24th title
defense. Both men exchange words and staredowns.
While Calypso is checking on the ref, Slavins
kicks him, and then the bell rings. Slavins
allows Calypso to hit him with a slap, so he
does, and Calypso lets Slavins do the same.
After a small chop fest, we turn it into an
exchange of punches, and Slavins breaks that
with a dropkick to the knee. Both men get up and
Slavins charges and gets caught in the Reverse
Dragon Sleeper, but Slavins fights out and we
have a staredown. They exchange kicks this time,
and Slavins once again gets the better with
repeated kicks and a dropkick to the knee.
Calypso runs up and hits two huge clotheslines,
and we finally start the match at full pace.
Calypso hits four super-stiff shots to Slavins'
back, and then goes for a stalling suplex.
Slavins lands on his feet and hits a fisherman
suplex, and then they exchange more punches on
their knees, and Calypso wins with a forearm.
Calypso picks up Slavins and hits the stalling
suplex this time and gets a two count. Calypso
applies a reverse bearhug, throws him down, and
hits three knees to the back, and ends with a
Calypso Flip and gets a two count. Calypso
applies the headlock on Slavins, but he fights
up, hits a snapmare, and then applies a reverse
Dragon Sleeper of his own. He lets go of it and
hits the dropkick to the back of the head, and
we take a break. We come back with Calypso
hitting a HUGE backbreaker on Slavins, but only
gets a two count. Slavins begins to leave, but
of course Calypso follows him and gets beat
down. After some punches, Slavins hits a bulldog
followed by the springboard kick to the head.
Slavins kicks the arm of Calypso but gets caught
in the Liontamer. Slavins tries to turn it
around, but gets caught in another modified
surfboard-type move, which then gets turned into
some other submission that can't be described.
Slavins' screams of pain explain it enough
though. Calypso picks up Slavins and hits a
sitout bodyslam, but only gets a two. Calypso
argues with the ref and gets superkicked by
Slavins as a "Let's Go Slavins!" chant starts.
Slavins hits a diving elbow over the chair and
gets a two count. Slavins drops a knee, knee
kicks to the back, and another knee to the chest
of Calypso. Slavins goes for a springboard RKO,
gets tossed and caught, but reverses it into a
DDT on the chair. Calypso kicks out at two.
Slavins stomps on Calypso's ribs and drops more
knees on Calypso. Modified Octopus gets turned
into a Shellshock from Calypso and both men are
down! Slavins attempts a Rube Goldberg Bulldog,
but Calypso reverses it into a facecrusher, and
hits the knee/slap/knee/slap combo on the back
followed by a running knee to the face. Calypso
poses and then hits a suplex. Calypso climbs the
ladder and gets caught by Slavins and lands on
his knee, almost breaking his ribs in the
process! Slavins misses the diving headbutt into
the wall, and Calypso hits his running knee but
falls due to the pain in his knee and ribs.
Slavins take advantage of this and locks in a
modified Figure Four, but Calypso manages to
fight out and roll Slavins up, but only gets a
two. Calypso picks up Slavins and they exchange
armbars and Calypso hits the Breakdown to get a
three count. They go back to chops, and Slavins
once again breaks it with a kick and Slavins
runs for a hurricarana but gets caught in a
powerbomb. That gets two, so Calypso turns it
into the Samoa Joe Boston crab, rolls it back
for a pin, then rolls it into the Haas of Pain
but he's forced to break it up. Slavins hits a
lot blow, an uppercut, and an RKO. Slavins
climbs the ladder and hits a double stomp off
the ladder, which had to crush the chest of
Calypso. Two super stiff kicks to the chest of
Calypso, but he ducks the third one and turns it
into a Styles Clash and hits it for two. Slavins
knocks Calypso down with a superkick and hits a
headbutt off the lader, but only gets two.
Slavins puts Calypso on the chair and goes for a
spear, but misses and gets nothing but chair!
Calypso picks him up and hits Slavins three
times with the chair - in the head, the back,
and then the head again. The ref tell shim to
stop with the chair, but Calypso said he never
did it while ramming his knee into the ribs of
Calypso, then following up with kicks to the
back and head. Calypso argues with the ref once
more, so Slavins hits an enzuguri to the back of
the head. Slavins hits a senton off the chair.
Slavins hits the spear...but Calypso kicks out!
Slavins goes for it once again, but Calypso
reverses it and catches him in the F5 and gets
the three count! Calypso wins!
(18:39)
****1/4 MOTYC for UWA, and once again Slavins loses
because he tried for the same move too many
times. A lot of the major moves Slavins hit in
his first match with Gage Calypso was able to
reverse, and Calypso won after reversing the
second spear. I'm not sure if this was their
best match, since their 30 Minute Ironman match
back in March was also great. The slow start
really hurt it, but once it picked up it got
good and it got there fast. After the match,
Calypso shakes hands with Slavins and poses with
the belt.
Highly Recommended show as this may be one of
best UWA shows to date. Two ***+ matches and a
match so bad it's a comedic masterpiece. This is
the first time the UWA has tried to do something
like this, and I have to say it worked great.
