UWA 06.26.05 Show Review

UWA 06.26.05

We have two angles for this show and it's 90+ degrees outside. The story is basically Scott and Calypso wanted to see how long they could go in the heat.

Calypso Vs Scott Slavins (UWA Undisputed Champion)
Slavins has a goblet of fire and Calypso has new music and new attire. Both men talk trash and circle each other to start things off then grapple and push each other off. They circle again, grapple, and Calypso pushes Slavins into the wall and breaks it. Test of strength sees Slavins going behind for the arm wringer but Calypso goes behind and Slavins snapmares out, Calypso catches a kick and locks in the modified leg clutch. Both men circle each other again, Slavins tries to trick out a test of strength, Calypso catches it though, gets caught into it again, and then gets a stiff elbow to the shoulder. Calypso teases yet another test of strength and they finally lock it in. Slavins trips Calypso down but he bridges out to get knees to the stomach. He turns Slavins down and hits a reverse curbstomp on Slavins and both men stare each other down. Grapple is followed by a battle for the headlock and Slavins rolls out. Another grapple and the same thing follows, another grapple, arm wringer battle, Calypso wins, variation of the Russian leg Sweep and another modifed stretch that's hard to explain. Bob calls it the "Legs in a pretzel headlock" but Slavins fights out into the armlock followed by repeated knees to the arm. Headbutts to the shoulder and Slavins lets Calypso as they grapple again, Calypso locks in the headlock, Slavins tries to roll out but Calypso holds on. Calypso goes to his feet and gets tossed but holds the headlock on as Slavins tries for rollups to let go of the headlock. After a third roll up Calypso breaks the headlock and both men stare each other down once more. Test of strength with Calypso winning and he bends Slavins in half over his knee while he headbutts the chest. Slavins rolls out in the arm drag and slams the arm on the ground followed by a knee to the back of the arm. Calypso gets on his feet and tries to roll out but Slavins rolls with him and keeps the arm wringer in. Calypso grapples Slavins' legs with is and locks in, as Bob calls it, the "Sloppy Joe Ice Cream Machine" and goes to work more on the leg with the pretzel lock. Calypso takes out Slavins legs, pushes out, Slavins hits two shoulder tackles on the hurt arm and both men are down. More work on the damaged arm and Calypso goes to the outside to gather his thoughts. Slavins back to the arm wringer as he's taken down to one knee but Calypso fireman's carry his way out of it into the chicken wing into the Pretzel Lock once more into a roll up and both men battle for the roll up but only gets two. Slavins charges with punches and hits a suplex for two which Calypso turns into a roll up of his own as we cut to commerical. We're joined back in with more rollups and it stops with Calypso putting Slavins into a headlock and they fight for even MORE rollups but finally Calypso makes him stop. Slavins reverses into the headscissors and grabs the arm in a nice submission but Calypso picks him up in that position and hits a nasty-looking backbreaker. Punch fest ensues until Slaivns goes to elbows on the arm followed by a DDT. Slavins goes for the Cattle Mutiliation but Calypso tries to work his way out of it, tosses Salvins into the ropes and gets a headscissors for his troubles. Calypso works on the leg some more with some knee stomps followed by the "ScrewMeDoug" but Slavins rolls to the outside and is having troubles standing. Calypso hits a suplex and goes for the Angel's Wing but Calypso fights out and hits a weird-looking DDT. Slavins grabs the chair and nails Calypso in the head with it and he falls straight down. Slavins does the front flip over two chairs on Calypso then Slavins hits a senton from the chair and gets two. Calypso turns the pin into a headscissors and both men exchange close two-counts until Slavins smashes Calypso's head. Slavins goes for the reverse armbraw but Calypso picks Slavins up into a backdrop. Calypso grabs a chair but Slavins hits the Van Damninator. Slaivns put a chair on Calypso's arm and does a front flip off the chair onto the arm! Slavins puts Calypso on the chair, tosses him a chair, and hits a dropkick. Both men pick up chairs and smash the chairs together. Calypso gets dropkick, hits a snapmare, three kicks to the back, tosses a chair into Slavins face and smashes it right in his face for two! Calypso nails Slavins with a chairshot that sends him spinning in mid-air followed by reverse breakdown for two. Slavins comes back with a superkick and hits a springboard RKO off the chair, misses a senton, and Calypso nails a drop-toe hold on the chair. Calypso goes to powerbomb Slavins, lands on his feet, but runs into a huge clothesline. Calypso hits a couple knees to the back followed by a front flip followed by the running ole knee. He even chants 'ole'. Both men get up and grapple and Slavins get pushed down as Calypso poses. Slavins pushes Calypso down the next time, Calypso trips him off, gets pushed off and hit with an enzuguri. Slavins hits a superkick and goes to work on the arm some more. Calypso turns it into the headscissors, turns it around, but Slavins fights out and flips back onto the arm until Calypso snapmares out of it, hits repeated knees and slaps to the back followed by an elbow. Horatio says Calypso slaps like a woman so he gets slapped really hard. We come back to commercial break to see Slavins dive off the chair to get powerbombed and then into the Samoa Crab. Slavins turns out of it and goes for the choke while Calypso holds a bearhug. Both let go and fight out as Slavins climbs the ladder and hits a tornado DDT and then a headscissors armbar. Slavins turns it into the Cattle Mutilation but Calypso rolls out it but can't the second time! Calypso eventually does break out of the hold and goes for the backdrop only for Slavins to take the leg out from under him and works on the arm even more but Calypso turns it into a rollup and Slavins rolls out of the ring. Calypso reverses a cruicifx into a tilt-a-whirl bodyslam but only gets two. Calypso locks in the leglock submission but Slavins applies one of his own and both men have a leglock in on each other. Calypso turns it over one more time to apply the modified sharpshooter, then the "Sloppy Joe Ice Cream Machine." Calypso hits the Angel's Wings but Slavins kicks out at two. Slavins is given time to get up and manages to hit a massive gore on Calypso for two. Both men battle each other on their knees. Slavins hits a modified shining wizard and then Calypso hits one of his own. Both men exchange forearms while standing until Slavins hits a diving forearm to the head followed by the RKO. That only gets two though as Calypso pushes him off and hits some stiff kicks as we cut to commercial breaks. We come back with Calypso locking in the leglock with a bridge. Calypso tosses Slavins into the ropes and catches him in the F5 and he crawls over to Slavins for the three count at
32:24! ****1/2 I actually liked this match over their 05.20.05 match as it was longer and they focused more on the technical wrestling in the first part and managed to hit all their big moves as well. I also liked all the reversals and ring psychology used in the match which provided for an overall better match. In my opinion the best UWA match to date.

So, while it's only a one-match show, the match is one of the longest in recent UWA memory (only defeated by the Slavins/Calypso ironman which went 32:29 in OT) and is entertaining throughout. Thumbs up.
