UWA 07.02.04 Show Review
So this was the first "official" UWA show. Gage
wasn't here so we're down to Calypso, Scott
Slavins, and Outlaw. Before the show even
happened there were numerous plans on how to
book this show but the easiest one was chosen
and thus we got...this. Regardless, this is a
historic UWA show, so let's get underway.
Our commentary is done soley by Trace who has
little emotion.
Calypso comes out and cuts a promo;
"Tonight is a historic night for not only
myself, not only for the wrestles for the back -
tonight is historic for we will crown the first
ever UWA World Heavyweight Champion. Tonight is
historic for many reasons, historic for the fact
that I, Calypso, will become the first ever UWA
Heavyeight Champion. There are many men on my
back who are trying to take this opportunity,
this moment, away from me. Whether that being
Outlaw, perhaps the sorriest piece of trash I
have ever met in my life - Outlaw, he stands at
not even six feet and barely weighs anything; he
think he can beat me..."
Outlaw comes out and gives Calypso a Lights Out,
then Slavins comes up and gets a Lights Out as
well. Outlaw's music hits as Slavins and Calypso
get up and shove each other. Calypso has the mic
and both men talk about their match later in the
night.
Tale of the tape for Outlaw.
The idea for the show was to have everyone face
each other in a singles match before the main
event triple threat to determine the first UWA
Champion meaning everybody had three matches.
Outlaw Vs Scott Slavins
Scott Slavins is coming out to "I Hate
Everything About You" while Outlaw comes out to
"The Game". This was also when UWA used
titantrons which lasted for about two shows, if
that. Both men grapple and Slavins knees Outlaw
in the gut followed by a DDT. He poses then
stomps on Outlaw a few times before missing a
punch and getting suplex by Outlaw. Outlaw hits
a clothesline but gets a low blow soon after.
Scott hits a fameasser which gets a two. More
stomps by Slavins followed by a superkick.
Slavins misses a frog splash off the chair (back
before they could afford a ladder) and Outlaw
follows up with a DDT. Outlaw waits for Slavins
to get up and hits a horrible Dragon Spinkick.
Shelton Benjamin he is not. Outlaw hits a
dropkick while Slavins is in a chair and the
chair's legs bend in half. Outlaw attempts to
slam Slavins into the wall but it gets reversed
and Slavins works on the leg. Scott locks in a
modified figure four but Outlaw reverses it,
only for Slavins to reverse it back in. Both men
look locked up pretty tightly in the move and
unable to escape but Outlaw finally breaks out
of it. Slavins runs up and hits a dropkick
though to regain control. Slavins continues to
work on the leg and then hits an elbow drop from
the gas pipe which Trace calls a "rung". Slavins
goes for a spear but Outlaw manages to get a
knee up and get a two count. Slavins fights out
of a Lights Out and hits a DDT followed by a
Crossface which is turned into an ankle lock.
Outlaw flips out and Slavins goes into the wall.
Both men stagger to their feet but Slavins hits
another dropkick. He stomps on Outlaw to keep
him down for about thirty seconds then hits a
frog splash. Slavins tunes up and hits another
superkick, this one connecting a lot more than
the previous, yet it only gets two! Slavins
throws a hissy fit and walks into a horrible big
boot that misses by a mile. outlaw locks in a
horrible sharpshooter but Slavins manages to
fight out. Both men get up and Outlaw hits the
Lights Out and wins the first ever UWA match at
8:45.
Calypso comes out and hits Outlaw with a
Breakdown, taunts him, and then leaves. Match
was pretty bad but since this was the first show
I'll rate on a different scale and give it *. By
today's standards it's -**.
Winner: Outlaw
Scott Slavins cuts a promo saying he's going to
win the title.
Tale of the tape for Scott Slavins.
Scott Slavins Vs Calypso
Calypso comes out to "Miseria Cantare" and this
match is taped extremely close up, making it
hard to watch. Calypso walks out looking
depressed and with a lot...a LOT, of hair. Both
men stare down and Slavins goes for two punches
which do nothing. Calypso punches back, tosses
Slavins into the ropes and reverses a
headscissors into a clothesline. Calypso goes
for a suplex but Slavins reverses it into a pin.
Calypso tosses Slavins into the wall and hits a
series of hard right punches only to get hit
with a headscissors. Calypso doesn't look hurt
though. Slavins smashes Calypso's face into the
gas pipe followed by some stiff punches to the
head. Calypso gets a dropkick while on his
knees. Slavins goes for a spilt legged leg drop
but Calypso powers out and hits a DDT out of a
grapple. Calypso hits a forearm to the back
followed by stomps on the fallen Slavins and
then picks him up for yet another clothesline.
Slavins hits a low blow on Calypso followed by a
bulldog off the gas pipe! Slavins doesn't go for
the pin though and completes the leg drop he
attempted earlier in the match. Calypso kicks
his way up and hits a big boot. Calypso goes for
a backdrop but Slavins lands on his feet and
hits applies the ankle lock but Calypso fights
out and takes control once again. Calypso hits a
fameasser on Slavins and then hits a brutal
legdrop off the gaspipe crushing Slavins which
only gets a two. Calypso applies the Haas of
Pain and then raises it to a bad angle but
Slavins gets to the ropes. Both men are up but
Calypso hits a splash against the wall then
rests on the chair. Slavins is having troubles
standing so Calypso puts in a headlock, gets
pushed up, and hit with a dropkick and an elbow
drop to the back. Slavins works on the arm but
misses a spear and gets a stiff kick and a
suplex for his troubles. Calypso without a
goatee isn't right. Calypso goes for a cocky pin
and only gets a two. Front face lock into a leg
choke turned into a rear chin lock to Slavins
which is followed up by a toss to the ropes,
Slavins goes for a headscissors - reversed -
lands on his feet, dropkcicks Calypso down -
dropkicks Calypso while he's down, then works on
the back with submissions and knees. Slavins
hits a spear and hits a frog splash but Calypso
throws Slavins off and hits a vicious superkick
and Slavins' head bounces off the ground.
Calypso hits a diving karate kick followed by a
bulldog. Calypso with a Trash Compactor bending
Slavins in half and follows with a super stiff
kick to the back. Slavins begs Calypso off then
slaps Calypso twice which only angers Calypso,
so Slavins hits a kick to the side followed by
kicks to the head. Slavins hits a diving
dropkick off the chair followed by punches.
Slavins sets up the chair and hits a a
springboard spear off the chair but Calypso
kicks out! Calypso hits a running knee, sits
Slavins in the chair, and hits a charging
superkick. Calypso goes for the F5 but Slavins
lands on his feet, hits a series of chops and
slaps but Calypso picks him back up in the F5 -
Slavins rolls out, gets tossed into the ropes,
and Slavins spears Calypso for the third time
and gets the pin at
11:38!
Much better than Outlaw/Slavins and the match of
the night, though that isn't saying match.
***1/2 for the time, *1/2 for now. They had an
interesting big man/little man dynamic at first
with Calypso seemingly being a monster but
Slavins found ways to counter Calypso's power
and with his speed and quick thinking beat him.
Winner: Scott Slavins
Calypso Vs Outlaw
Outlaw attacks Calypso from behind and hits a
DDT to start the match off. Outlaw hits some
stomps (a lot of those tonight) but Calypso
fights back and hits a clotheslines and hits
stomps of his own. Calypso quickly goes to work
on the leg with kicks then knee drops. Calypso
tosses Outlaw and kicks Outlaw's leg sending him
down and Calypso works on the leg even more.
Calypso hangs on the leg but Outlaw kicks out
but gets taken out with a chop black. Calypso
tosses Outlaw into the wall then applauds
himself. Odd. Calypso drops onto the leg in a
submission and does it a couple more times for
good measure. He gives a double foot stomp on
the leg and then has the ref ask if he gives.
Calypso rests on the chair then kicks the leg
out from under Outlaw once more. Calypso locks
in the stretch muffler but Outlaw fights hit way
up with repeated punches then a dropkick off the
chair. Calypso gets up before Outlaw though and
takes the leg out from under Outlaw once more
and continues the work. Repeated stiff kicks to
the leg followed by a suplex. Only gets a two
count. Forearm into a headlock but Outlaw fights
out and hits a big boot on his good leg. Outlaw
misses a splash off the gas pipe and Calypso
hits the Calypso Elbow which, sadly, only gets a
two count. Calypso tosses Outlaw into the ropes
but gets a DDT for his troubles. Outlaw tries to
kip up but his leg is too damaged. Outlaw tosses
Calypso into the house but falls under the
pressure of his leg. Outlaw goes for a Lights
Out but Calypso fights out and hits the Pedigree
which Outlaw kicks out of at two. Calypso hits
his own version of the Lights Out but a lazy
cover only gets him two. Calypso argues with the
ref and Outlaw hits a takeover and locks in the
sharpshoot, still crappy as ever. Calypso sells
it like death but Outlaw lets go of the hold for
no reason whatsoever. I'll chalk it up to it
hurt his leg too much to be bent or something.
Outlaw gets kicked in the leg once again to be
taken down and locked in the Figure Four.
Calypso lets go after Outlaw fights out of it,
goes for another FF and gets booted in the butt.
Both men stagger up and Outlaw hits another
crappy dragon spin kick. Outlaw picks Calypso up
but gets caught in the F5 but Outlaw lands on
his feet! Outlaw hits a big boot but falls due
to his damaged leg. Outlaw climbs the chair but
misses a legdrop and Calypso runs up and locks
in the Figure Four and they fight in it for a
minute and forty seconds. Calypso lets go after
it gets reversed and slaps the ref. Ankle lock
on the chair but Outlaw flips out and Calypso
flies off the chair. Calypso gets up first, hits
the F5 and then locks in the Ankle Lock and
hooks the leg and Outlaw taps out at
13:48!
** for then, DUD for now. After the match
Calypso attacks Outlaw's ankle with a chair,
doing the Pillman stunt then simply smashing the
ankle with the chair. This match was all
psychology but this was really before Claypso
knew all the submission he does now and even
know he's better suited with the upper-body
submissions. Outlaw's inconsistant selling
didn't help either.
Winner: Calypso
Outlaw says he's wrestling on the hurt ankle
against Doctor's orders and he'll win the UWA
title tonight - regardless!
So every man has a loss and a win with Slavins
over Calypso but under Outlaw, Calypso over
Outlaw but under Slavins, and Outlaw over
Slavins but under Calypso.
A recap video of the night is shown.
Triple Threat Main Event to Determine the
First Ever UWA Champion
Scott Slavins Vs Outlaw Vs Calypso
The ring (AKA tarp) is set up at a different
place and the camera is a wide shot. Man, I do
not want to watch this. Calypso sits down in the
chair as Slavins and Outlaw lock up and do
nothing of note. Calypso applauds as he takes
the belt from the ref and rests it on his
shoulder. Slavins hits a leg drop but runs into
a clothesline from Outlaw. Outlaw hits a DDT.
Calypso suggests a Lights Out so both Outlaw and
Slavins go over there and double team him and
then go back to the ring. Slavins hits a DDT as
Calypso gets in and pushed Slavins down followed
by a clothesline. Stiff punch to Outlaw and then
to Slavins and both of them are down. Calypso
works on the leg and Slavins/Calypso double team
on Outlaw's leg trying to one-up each other.
Slavins goes for a stalling knee drop, Calypso
catches him and tosses him into the ropes for a
big boot. Slavins hits a lot blow and
Slavins/Outlaw double team Calypso for the time
being. Calypso runs out of the ring and Outlaw
goes for a lights out but Calypso saves Slavins
only to get a stunner - Outlaw hits a dropkick
to Slavins. Calypso goes for the cover but
Outlaw breaks it up. Calypso locks in the Boston
Crab but Slavins hits Calypso with the DDT and
then locks Outlaw in the Ankle Lock only to get
a superkick from Calypso. Slavins gets tossed in
the ropes and hits a headscissors on Calypso
then goes back to work on Outlaw's leg. Boston
Crab to Outlaw and Calypso hits Slavins with the
belt. Outlaw punches Calypso but Slavins has
dropkicks for everyone! Slavins hits an elbow
drop off...a slide for two. Outlaw breaks a
submission with a clothesline on Slavins. They
do a bunch of nothing for 15 more minutes until
Calypso sets up a table. He tries to give
Slavins an FU through it but it doesn't break,
so he picks up Outlaw and gives Outlaw an FU for
through the table but Slavins breaks it up.
Slavins fights Calypso but gets caught in the FU
and he finally goes through the table for the
pin at
22:23!
Calypso is your first UWA Champion!!! DUD for
then, -***** for now. Seriously - this match is
just bad. These three had a much better triple
threat a month before but that match never
"counted". I give that triple threat *** for
then, * for now. But nonetheless this match, no
matter how bad, was important since it started
Calypso title reign which has lasted over a
year. Quite impressive...even with it's rocky
start.
Winner and FIRST EVER UWA CHAMPION: Calypso
Calypso cuts a promo basically saying he
wrestled three matches in a row and won two of
them and issues an open challenge for the next
show - even if it's the US army.
Overall this show is horrible. Even by
early-2004 standards. The only decent match is
Slavins/Calypso and that match was zoomed in the
whole time. It's historically important as the
first official UWA show, the crowning of the
champion, and of course the begin of Calypso's
amazing title reign. Having four matches back
then was a horrible idea although I wouldn't
mind seeing a Gage/Slavins/Calypso show now
where they each wrestled each other and capped
it off in a triple threat. That being said, pick
this up if you want to see how UWA started, but
otherwise stay FAR away. Thumbs down.
